Perth's Scarborough Beach unveils new look

Perth’s iconic Scarborough Beach has officially unveiled its new look, bringing an end to 18 months of disruptive construction work.

The project has revived the area’s former ‘Snake Pit’ with a new 12-foot competition-grade skate bowl paying homage to the famous dance venue of the 50s and 60s.

Children enjoyed the area’s new playground while a new observation tower and transport hub were also unveiled.

The iconic stretch of coastline has been almost impossible to access while the new development took shape, sending a number of local businesses broke and leaving several retailers on the edge of financial ruin.

Boho Espresso and Matisse Beach Club were forced to close their doors while the $100 million redevelopment took shape.

Geoff Counsel, owner of Cordingley’s Surf Shop, has welcomed today’s opening but says local business owners aren’t out of the woods yet.

“For the last two years we have done it extremely tough and we need another two years just to get back on our feet,” he said.

The $5 million redevelopment of the Surf Life Saving is expected to be finished later this year.
