Sandilands asks if Lorde is a lesbian

Lorde has got the better of Kyle Sandilands in an awkward on-air exchange after the shock jock appeared to suggest the New Zealand singer was a lesbian.

The Grammy winner was speaking to Sandilands and Jackie O on KIIS FM yesterday when the broadcaster brought up the artist's friendship with US singer Taylor Swift.

"Are you bringing your new bestie, Taylor Swift?" Sandilands asked.

"I see you guys' pictures everywhere. Are you guys, uh, are you together now?

"The personal question left Lorde speechless and the radio host re-phrased his inquiry in arguably less eloquent terms."Not together as in lesbians: I'm not talking about 'Ellen together'," Sandilands said.

"What do you mean you're not talking about 'Ellen together'? Is there something wrong with lesbians?" Lorde replied.

A shaken Sandilands quickly backtracked, adding that he would love to see it and asking the Kiwi to "confirm now you're in a lesbian relationship with her.

But the seventeen-year-old singer was having none of it.

"Don't even try it. Not working," she said.
