Two sailors have been rescued in Bass Strait after the steering on their yacht failed.

Police said the men had been sailing from Queenscliff to Western Port Bay on Saturday afternoon but were forced to issue a distress call four nautical miles south of Point Nepean.

The coastguard responded and managed to stabilise the yacht until water police arrived and began towing the vessel back to Queenscliff.
