Police allege a sword-wielding attack on a South Australian police officer was an attempt to kill both her and her partner.

9News believes it was sparked by reports of a man unleashing a brutal assault on his own mother.

"I understand there was a female and a male officer and the counts of attempted murder relate to both the alleged attack on both the female officer and the male officer," Police Minister Dan Cregan said.

She's recovering in a stable condition.

The person allegedly wielding the sword at the block of units on High Street was a 30-year-old man.

Police were called there to reports he was assaulting his mother, who lives there.
