A bid by the South Australian government to close the $391 million sale of the State Administration Centre in Adelaide, where Premier Jay Weatherill has his office, has failed.

Treasurer Tom Koutsantonis says the government was ready to settle with the preferred bidder Commerical and General in October and again on Tuesday this week, but the deal didn't go through.

Mr Koutsantonis has told state parliament the government is considering its position but can provide no more details because of confidentiality issues.

Deputy Liberal leader Vickie Chapman says taxpayers have a right to know when the deal will settle "once and for good".
