SA skydiving pilot narrowly avoids drone

A skydiving plane has had a near miss with a drone while 1100ft over Adelaide.

The pilot spotted the drone about 100ft beneath her as she prepared to land at Parafield Airport on Sunday, the Civil Aviation Safety Authority says.

She was not forced to take evasive action to avoid a collision and CASA doesn't know who was flying the drone.

"They've got to understand you're sharing the skies with other aircraft, and drones and aircraft don't go together," CASA spokesman Peter Gibson told AAP on Wednesday.

"If it hits the propellor for example, you're obviously putting the propellor engine at risk. If you hit the windscreen, the pilot would be shocked to say the least and potentially might have difficulties if it penetrated the windscreen".

Mr Gibson urged people flying drones to keep them under 400ft, and avoid flying them all together around planes and airports.
