SA parly committee to look into home abuse

A report into the abuse and poor care of patients at a South Australian government nursing home is to be referred to a state parliamentary committee.

Minister for Mental Health Leesa Vlahos has told parliament the joint committee on matters related to elder abuse will consider the report into the Oakden facility.

An investigation into the Oakden by SA's chief psychiatrist recently uncovered the rough handling of patients, an excessive use of restraints and a concerning level of injuries.

Ms Vlahos and Premier Jay Weatherill have apologised to families who had patients at Oakden and have pledged to close the facility.

A number of staff have been referred to health care regulators for investigation.

The minister said the parliamentary committee would also be asked to look into the selection and screening of staff working in the aged care sector.

"I give a firm commitment to the families and residents of Oakden that I am committed to taking action and fixing this situation to ensure that it cannot happen again," she told parliament on Tuesday.

Ms Vlahos also stood by her actions in initiating and dealing with the investigation and again refused opposition calls for her to quit.

"I won't be bullied into resigning by the opposition," she said.
