SA parliament to go live online

Forget the millions for health, education and roads, the most important spending measure in the South Australian budget could well be funds to stream parliament live online.

Queue the eye rolls and the sarcastic comments.

Seriously, the government will spend $1.4 million in the coming year to install cameras in both chambers of state parliament to bring all the jibes, interjections and insults MPs throw at each other onto our computer screens, tablets and TVs.

To be fair, the audio has long been available, but soon MPs will be seen as well as heard.

The system could be up and running within a year with Premier Jay Weatherill saying greater access to parliamentary proceedings is central to Australia's democratic system.

"We want to give even greater access to the deliberations of elected members and help South Australians become more involved and better informed about government decision making," he said.
