SA nuclear dump must have social support

A proposed nuclear waste dump in South Australia should be scrapped if the community doesn't support it, the state's nuclear fuel cycle royal commissioner says.

Former governor Kevin Scarce emphasised the need for community consent after handing down the royal commission's findings on Monday.

His inquiry recommends SA take the world's nuclear waste in exchange for billions of dollars in revenue and thousands of jobs.

"Social consent is absolutely critical ... If it's not delivered, don't start the project," Mr Scarce told ABC radio on Tuesday.

"I want to have that debate. If the community doesn't agree with it, it falls."

Premier Jay Weatherill said he was willing to consider the proposal and that a final decision would "put people before money".
