SA Libs want cyclist footpath speed limit

South Australia's opposition will push for a 10km/h speed limit for cyclists on footpaths.

"A 10km/h limit represents jogging speed and is also the speed that most gophers are limited to," opposition transport spokesman David Pisoni said on Friday.

He also wants pedestrians injured in collisions to be able to claim medical expenses through third-party insurance if they can't identify the cyclist.

The changes, which would treat a bicycle on a footpath or road the same as an unregistered vehicle, will be put forward at a Local Government Association cycling roundtable in Adelaide on Friday.

But Transport Minister Stephen Mullighan said the police had previously advised against speed limits on footpaths.

He also said people injured by cyclists could already claim damages through common law provisions.

"Their latest proposals will do nothing more than slug motorists with higher taxes and do nothing to tackle those cyclists who do the wrong thing," Mr Mullighan said.
