Fed govt committed to SA road project

The federal government has reaffirmed its commitment to completing Adelaide's north-south road corridor within a decade but remains at odds with SA over funding.

Federal Treasurer Joe Hockey said the commonwealth was absolutely committed to the project and blamed a lack of planning by the state for not including extra cash in last week's budget.

"Quite frankly, you can't put new money into a budget if you haven't got any details," the treasurer told reporters in Adelaide on Tuesday.

"You don't go and write out a cheque for $9 billion without dotting the Is and crossing the Ts."

But South Australian Treasurer Tom Koutsantonis said the commonwealth had been given the plan in December last year, yet still failed to deliver any extra cash last week.

He said if Prime Minister Tony Abbott was to fulfil his pledge to complete the corridor in a decade, funding needed to be allocated immediately.

Mr Hockey said the plan referred to by the SA treasurer was a draft proposal and the commonwealth only received the final plan on Monday.

It immediately moved to submit it to Infrastructure Australia for evaluation, he said.

"I don't want to make any detailed or extensive commitment now," the treasurer said.

"But we are absolutely committed to delivering the sort of infrastructure the people of South Australia want."
