New judicial watchdog opens in SA

South Australia's new Judicial Conduct Commissioner is about to start taking complaints against serving judicial officers.

Bruce Lander QC, who also serves as SA's independent commissioner against corruption, will begin his new role on Monday after his appointment was confirmed by Attorney-General John Rau in August.

Commissioner Lander says members of the judiciary, like other public office holders, are expected to conduct themselves professionally.

"For the most part I am sure that they do," he said.

"However in circumstances where they do not meet acceptable professional standards, there should be an independent person who can address that conduct."

In his role as Judicial Conduct Commissioner, Mr Lander will investigate issues related to the conduct of serving judicial officers that are relevant to their duties.

Where issues of corruption are involved, he will use his ICAC powers to conduct his inquiries.
