A man has died after he was stabbed several times at a home in Adelaide's south, with his alleged attacker believed to be his stepson.

The 63-year-old was found at his Oaklands Park home on Wednesday morning and was taken to the Flinders Medical Centre where he died early on Thursday.

A 29-year-old man from Christie Downs has been charged with murder and will appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court later on Thursday.

Detective Chief Inspector Wayne Overmeyer said the man charged was believed to be the victim's stepson but the motive for the killing remained unclear.

"That's why we're investigating the entire matter," Insp Overmeyer told reporters at the scene.

"It's an extremely sad time and we need to be respectful about the victim's family as well.

"We need to get to the bottom of why these things happen."

Neighbours told the Nine Network there was blood everywhere.

"It was just like a whole shock. You just don't think it would happen in this area," Braidyn Lloyd told Nine.
