A new fishing competition has been launched in South Australia, offering anglers the chance to win up to $10,000.

The "Let's Go Fishing" competition is aiming to boost recreational fishing and support South Australian businesses struggling due to the state's toxic algal bloom.

The competition, which is open to everyone, features three prizes in each of its four rounds.

RecFish SA has released several fish with blue tags across the Murray River, the Happy Valley and Myponga reservoirs and in the ocean at Sellicks Beach and Waitpinga.

The first angler to catch a tagged fish and register the catch online will be awarded the grand prize.

"What this does is it allows us to focus on migratory species and freshwater options so we can keep having a good time fishing, but without impacting the marine environment anymore," Asher Dezsery from RecFish SA said.

Anglers have been encouraged to handle their catch with care.

"You want to take really good care of your fish, so keep it on a soft surface, always wet, you can cover their eyes with a soft wet rag and support their belly at all times so you can release them as easily as possible," Dezsery said.

Jamie Rymell from Tackle World is hoping the competition will attract both experienced and novice anglers, increasing sales of fishing equipment.

"Biggest tip is just come in and ask us for the tips for those particular areas that you are fishing," he said.

The free competition runs until 30 June next year.
