Inquest examines SA girl's swing death

Doctors failed to detect an Adelaide girl's internal injuries after she fell from a swing at vacation care, an inquest has heard.

Nine-year-old Leila Marijke Baartse died in hospital on October 1 after she was found unresponsive at her home in Strathalbyn, south of Adelaide, two days after the fall.

An autopsy revealed her cause of death to be peritonitis due to a perforated small bowel.

The inquest, before deputy state coroner Anthony Schapel, heard on Monday that Leila vomited several times, appeared pale and weak and complained of abdominal pain in the days leading to her death.

Counsel assisting the coroner, Naomi Kereru, said Leila was discharged from Adelaide's Women's and Children's Hospital in the early hours of September 30 after receiving pain medication.

The treating doctor took X-rays and noted that Leila had a high temperature and a rigid abdomen but sent her home, declaring there were "nil signs of peritonitis".

Leila was assessed by a GP later that day after vomiting again but the doctor did not examine her abdomen or check her vital signs, Ms Kereru said.

Her parents found her unresponsive early the next morning and rushed her to hospital but she could not be resuscitated.

The deputy coroner is expected to hear evidence from medical staff who treated Leila in the days leading to her death.
