A group campaigning for a solar thermal power plant to be built in Port Augusta is set to mark the first anniversary of the closure of the city's coal-fired power station.

Former power station worker and chairman of Repower Port Augusta Gary Rowbottom says while it was the best job he ever had, it's time for the SA government to back construction of a solar thermal plant.

"The lives of all of us changed this time last year," Mr Rowbottom says.

"Now, our community is looking to the future and with the premier's support we can become a clean energy powerhouse."

Tuesday marks one year since Alinta Energy shut down its Northern Power Station which had operated since 1985.
