South Australian pig farmer who kidnapped, raped backpacker likely to be deported

Nearly a month after a jury found him guilty of all charges, Gene Bristow maintains his innocence and refuses to apologise for his horrific crimes.

Bristow kidnapped and raped a Belgian backpacker he lured online, repeatedly abusing her at this pig shed on his farm in Meningie, South Australia in February 2017.

Now the UK-born father-of-four is facing deportation, if he's ever released from prison.

"He will be taken into immigration custody and then likely be deported back to the United Kingdom," Bristow's lawyer Chris Weir told the court.

Bristow used chains and cable ties to shackle the young woman to a couch, threatening to shoot her, if she tried to escape.

His lawyer says horrified relatives - who had no idea what was happening on the farm - have abandoned the 54-year-old.

"He is likely to have lost his marriage, he is estranged from all of his children and... it's very likely that the family will lose the property," Mr Weir said.

Prosecutors revealed the pig farmer had begun planning his crimes two months earlier, telling a judge he wanted to keep the backpacker trapped inside the shed for more than a week.

But when the 26-year-old managed to use her laptop to message a friend, Bristow panicked and released her, as police swarmed the town.

Bristow has been in custody ever since and his victim wants him to stay behind bars for life.

"The profound effect the crime has had on her is self-evident … in effect, destroying what was once a confident and independent person," prosecutor Michael Foundas said.

Bristow will learn his fate when he's sentenced in May.
