A man will face court over a crash that has killed an elderly woman in Adelaide.

Police say a 23-year-old Elizabeth South man has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving after crashing his car into another in that suburb about 10pm on Wednesday.

The driver and only occupant of the other car, a 74-year-old Elizabeth South woman, was rushed to the Royal Adelaide Hospital but died of her injuries.

Only minutes before the collision police had briefly pursued the 23-year-old's car in Salisbury but had to stop the chase for safety reasons.

The man has been refused bail and will face the Elizabeth Magistrates Court on Thursday.

The fatality brings the state's road toll to 72 compared to 86 at the same time last year.
