Police have arrested a 15-year-old boy, who they say was driving a car while wearing a balaclava in scorching heat in Adelaide's north.

The driver first came to the attention of police when he was spotted wearing the mask in the 30-degree heat on Midway Road at Elizabeth East.

Officers tried to stop the vehicle but the driver refused.

The stolen vehicle eventually came to a halt in a creek bed after police successfully deployed road spikes on Hamblynn Road.

"It was like one of those things you see in those action movies but it was right there... front row seats without paying the premium ticket," witness Michael Soule said.

The Toyota sedan had limped for a distance on its rims before police swooped on the driver.

"It was horrific. You could hear it, metal on metal, it was like if you had your ear up next to a grinder," another witness, April Burton, said.
