Andrew Southcott to stand for speaker job

Federal member for the South Australian seat of Boothby, Andrew Southcott, will run for the role of Speaker in the wake of Bronwyn Bishop's resignation.

Dr Southcott has confirmed he will offer himself as a candidate at the next Liberal Parliamentary Party meeting.

"It is one of the most important roles in federal parliament and I would be honoured to serve if asked to do so," he said in a statement on Monday.

Dr Southcott said it was "both unexpected and flattering" for his name to be put forward.

He said he had consulted with his parliamentary colleagues and would offer himself as a candidate, following those discussions.

Dr Southcott holds his southern Adelaide seat by a margin of more than seven per cent after a six per cent swing to him at the 2013 federal election.

Mrs Bishop quit as Speaker on Sunday in the wake of the expenses scandal, which has also sparked a review of parliamentary entitlements.
