Fire tears through Adelaide primary school overnight

A fire has torn through an Adelaide primary school overnight.

The blaze broke out in Hallett Cove South Primary just before midnight, spreading to the school’s gym and offices.

Witness Tayla Kuchel said she thought there was a bonfire nearby.

“We saw all the smoke, then we heard the crackling, so we thought it was fireworks going on.

“Me and my step-sister ran down here to see what was going on, and we saw the roof of the school on fire,” she said.

The estimated repair cost is in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

School holidays are on in South Australia and students are not due to return to the school until next week. 

It is unclear if the school will be open.
