South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas has slammed footy officials for demanding taxpayer concessions in exchange for allowing cricket's Sheffield Shield final to be held at the Adelaide Oval.

While Malinauskas has remained tight-lipped on who exactly has made the request, 9News understands it relates to the multimillion-dollar Footy Express bus deal between the state government and Adelaide's two AFL clubs: the Crows and Power.

"I think it's a little bit galling, that people are trying to use an opportunity to look after fans as an opportunity to slug the taxpayer, and I won't be having it," the premier said.

AFL chief executive Andrew Dillon has since confirmed the request has been withdrawn, but there's still no deal for the Shield final to take place at the Adelaide Oval between two AFL games.

The sticking point now appears to be concerns about the potential for a sub-standard playing surface, and specifically who pays a player's compensation if it leads to a serious injury.

Adelaide Oval officials remain confident in their ability to successfully host both football and cricket events in quick succession.
