SA powerbroker Don Farrell wants to return to the Senate

South Australian Labor powerbroker Don Farrell is making a tilt to return to the Senate.

Mr Farrell, 61, left parliament in 2014 when he lost his Senate seat after he gave up the top spot on the ticket in favour of Penny Wong.

The Adelaide Advertiser said he would nominate for the Labor Senate ticket before nominations close at 10am on Wednesday morning.

SA Police Minister Peter Malinauskas said he'd welcome Mr Farrell's return to the Senate.

"I think that would be a good result," he told ABC radio.

"We've got a pretty strong team here in South Australia led by Penny Wong for many years. I hope that strength continues."
