South Australian drivers will be fined almost $350 for overtaking cyclists unsafely

New road rules in South Australia mean drivers will be fined $347 if they fail to leave a gap of at least one metre when overtaking cyclists.

Motorists must leave a gap of at least one metre when passing cyclists in zones of up to 60km/h in an effort to reduce accidents, Transport Minister Stephen Mullighan said.

When the speed limit is 60km/h or more, drivers must leave a 1.5 metre gap.

All cyclists, and not just children, will also be able to use footpaths under the new rules, which are set to begin on October 25.
