Adelaide researchers are developing a device to help prevent potentially fatal blood clots.

The cuff like device wraps around a patient's legs, applying pressure to promote circulation and prevent blood clots that travel to the lungs, developer and Flinders University professor John Arkwright says.

The condition known as pulmonary embolism, is the fifth leading cause of death in Australia, and more lethal than breast or prostate cancers.
