SA ALP pledges jail for violent offenders

All offenders convicted of violence offences will have to serve time in jail under a re-elected South Australian government.

A Labor government would introduce the new Mandatory Imprisonment law on the first day in parliament in 2014, Premier Jay Weatherill.

Under the law, a court would not be able to fully suspend a sentence of two years or more for a serious violent offence.

"The new Mandatory Imprisonment law would mean that the days of fully suspended sentences for serious violence will be over - convicted offenders will serve prison time," Mr Weatherill said.

The government was concerned about recent cases when inadequate sentences were imposed for single punches, he said.
