The Turnbull government's plan to simplify health insurance will include separate provisions for rural Australia.

The government will establish gold, silver and bronze health policy categories if re-elected on July 2 and set minimum standards for the 40,000 private health insurance products on the market, while Health Minister Sussan Ley also says rural health insurance would be a different scale.

"The things that matter in your health insurance aren't necessarily the same in the country as the city. You may only have one hospital. But travel is really important. Ambulance is really important," she told the Seven network on Sunday.
