'Speed' may have played role in tragic T-bone death of elderly Brisbane driver

A 72-year-old driver has died after his car was T-boned by a ute in Brisbane's south last night.

A 24-year-old man driving the ute crashed into the driver's door of the car at the Nursery Road intersection in Runcorn. The older man died at the scene.

The ute driver was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police believe speed may have been a factor.

Spokesman Inspector Sean Cryer has urged drivers "to slow down and lay off the grog".

People are appealing for witnesses and anyone with dashcam footage of the accident to contact them.

Meanwhile three more have died and four others have been seriously injured following a horror single-car crash in Kakadu National Park yesterday.

The smash occurred after midday on the Kakadu Highway near Cooinda Lodge.

"Three people died from their injuries at the scene," a CareFlight spokeswoman said in a statement.

Four female patients were flown to Royal Darwin Hospital. One is in a critical condition while the others are stable.

Two were expected to lose limbs and another had to be intubated at the crash site because of a suspected head injury, the CareFlight spokeswoman told AAP.

The NT News reports the Darwin family involved was travelling from Jabiru to Cooinda when the car crashed. The news outlet had earlier suggested the three people who died were tourists.

Northern Territory Police wouldn't provide additional details night but plan to hold a press conference this morning.
