A police investigation is underway after a violent brawl erupted following a rugby league match south of Sydney on the weekend.

At about 4.30pm on Sunday, players became involved in an off-field fight following the full-time siren at Cec Glenholmes Oval at Lake Illawarra.

The match, between the Warilla Gorillas and Shellharbour Stingrays, was itself marred by violence that resulted in two players being sent off.

Footage shows one player standing up from a tackle and appearing to throw punches at his opponent.

Police said they had been told those two players were involved in the subsequent post-match brawl.

Footage shows a number of people entangled in the fight, which took place just outside the oval fence.

Officials and bystanders separated the group.

During the fight, a 27-year-old man suffered a small wound to his face, but did not require medical treatment.

Police have begun an investigation into the incident.

Anybody with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
