Striking drone image of young sharks hunting fish wins photo competition
The dynamics between predator and prey are laid bare in a striking image of fish being attacked by sharks in the shallow waters of the Maldives, which has claimed the top prize in this year's Royal Society Publishing Photography Competition.
Photographer Angela Albi, a postdoctoral researcher at the Max Planck Institute of Animal Behaviour in Germany, was aided by drone pilot August Paula in capturing the winning image of the silverside fish and four young sharks.
'The hunt from above'
The photo also won the top prize in the competition's behavior category.

Jose Manuel Martinez Lopez has captured the eyes of a dried out bark scorpion under fluorescence, won the microimaging category.
The image was taken in Baja California, Mexico.

Peter Hudson won the top prize in ecology and environmental science for this striking image, where he captured the moment a locust was about to be eaten.

A supraglacial melting lake over the Greenlandic ice sheet was captured by David Garcia using an iPhone 15 pro during a flight.
The image was the winner in the Earth science category.

Taken from the Kottamia Astronomical Observatory in Egypt, this image was shot by Mohamed Aboushelib over the course of three nights and was the runner-up in the astronomy category.

Imran Sultan's winning photo in the astronomy category, this photo captured two nebulae found more than 7000 light years away.
'The Piscean Mad-Eye Moody'
Abhijeet Bayani took her students to the Indian western coast when they unearthed the live flatfish captured in this image, the runner-up in the ecology and environmental science category.
'The Lovecraftian World'
A sample of Armillaria, or honey fungus, was illuminated by LED lights to cast an eerie glow and dramatic shadows in Jose Manuel Martinez Lopez's The Lovecraftian World which was the runner up in the microimaging category.
'Breeding Frenzy'
Breeding Frenzy by Ovidiu Dragan captures an intense mating period between European toads in Romania and was runner up in the competition's behavior category.
