SES bombarded by 1100 calls for help after Victorian storms

More than 1100 Victorians needed help after wild weather ripped roofs off houses, tore trees from the ground and created commuter chaos across the state.

The State Emergency Service was bombarded by calls, receiving 1155 calls for help by 4pm yesterday after the storm swept through about 7am.

The Central region needed the majority of help during the severe weather, with 779 calls made to the SES.

Victoria SES spokeswoman Jacquie Quaine said most of the damage recorded across Victoria from the storm was trees falling on to roads, leaking roofs and debris blowing into properties.

Fallen trees and debris caused major delays on several Metro train lines and traffic was also affected.

Ms Quaine said a tree in Mount Waverley fell onto Springvale Road, blocking all six lanes of traffic.

In Aspendale, the roof of a house that was under construction blew into the neighbouring property of Andrea Perry.

Ms Perry said her family of four was woken by "an almighty bang" as her neighbour's roof was dumped onto her home in Melbourne's southeast.

"The neighbour's house next door, they are renovating, and the whole roof has completely landed on our house including all of our cars, boat and my husband's work truck," she told 3AW on Friday.

"It kind of felt like the world was ending in that moment."

Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Stephen King said Melbourne received about 25mm of rain during the storm, while the Dandenongs had 50mm.

Winds reached 95km/h in Melbourne and up to 117km/h at Mt Hotham, he said.

It remained windy in West and South Gippsland overnight and showers are expected to continue in the south of the state today.
