Australia awaits Stones tour statement

Security is tight at a Perth hotel where media are waiting for an official announcement about the Rolling Stones tour, which is expected to be cancelled after the death of Mick Jagger's girlfriend.

L'Wren Scott, a fashion designer and the Rolling Stones frontman's partner since 2001, was found dead at her New York apartment on Monday morning local time.

Jagger is in Perth with The Rolling Stones' 14 On Fire national tour, which was due to begin on Wednesday.

At 7.15am, equipment trucks were still arriving at the venue, the new Perth Arena.

An announcement about the tour is expected at 9am (12pm AEDT).

Gathering media at the Hyatt hotel, where the band is staying, have been instructed to stay 80m away from the premises.

However, there are also unconfirmed reports the band has already left the hotel and were about to fly back to New York in a private jet.

The Hyatt declined to comment.

The Stones arrived in the West Australian capital early on Monday morning on the jet, which is emblazoned with the veteran group's distinctive tongue logo.

Fans took to social media and local radio to voice their concern the tour could be cancelled, with some reporting they had travelled from as far as Indonesia for the Perth show.

Scalpers were asking up to $3000 for the tickets, which ranged from $99 for "Lucky Dip" tickets sold exclusively through the band's website to nearly $600 for the near-stage "Tongue Pit".
