Rocks thrown at police car during pursuit

A man has been charged with high-range drink driving after a police pursuit in NSW's west during which rocks were thrown at the patrol car by bystanders.

Police say that about 3.40am (AEDT) on Sunday officers attempted to stop a Mitsubishi Magna in Bourke for a random breath test, but the driver took off and was pursued through the town.

"While driving along Yanda Street, a number of rocks were thrown at the police vehicle by bystanders, smashing one of the windows," police said in a statement.

Police continued the pursuit until the car stopped at the rear of a house and five people ran from it.

The driver was chased into a nearby house, where he was arrested.

Police said the 30-year-old returned a positive breath test and a breath analysis returned a reading of 0.270.

He was charged with police pursuit-not stop-drive dangerously (Skye's Law), driving with high-range PCA and not wearing a seatbelt.

The man was refused bail and appeared in Bourke Local Court on Sunday; he will reappear on Monday.
