Steak knives found buried in sand at kids' playground

Five steak knives have been found buried in sand at Rockhampton's new Kershaw Gardens playground.

Rockhampton Regional Council said the knives were found lying flat in the sand yesterday morning.

"This behaviour is sickening and malicious and not normal for our community," Mayor Margaret Strelow said.

"I hope those responsible think carefully about what they've done and consider if they would really be prepared to face up to what could have been very serious consequences."

The council is reviewing CCTV at the park to determine who planted the knives in the sand.

Local parents told 9NEWS they're shocked and disappointed by the "attack" on the $16 million play space, which was opened just a few weeks ago.

"When you're bringing your small children here you don't want to be worrying about weapons," one parent said.

A thorough search of the playground has been conducted and no more knives were found.

An investigation is underway.
