Fire crews working to spare homes from Rockhampton bushfire

Fire crews are working to protect homes at Mount Archer, in Rockhampton, as a bushfire moves towards the summit.

Nearly 40 firefighters are backburning behind dozens of properties as a blaze at New Zealand Gully tracks towards the mountain range.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) crews continue to monitor the blaze, which is burning in inaccessible land.

Weather conditions are working in their favour for now, but authorities have said that can change at any time. 

"If you get a wind shift or an increase in wind strength the fire can increase rapidly," QFES Inspector Les Williams told 9NEWS. 

Crews will remain at Mount Archer for a few days to monitor the incoming blaze. 

Authorities expect it to break containment lines and move towards Yeppoon and Lakes Creek. 

"Even with containment burns we're doing here, it's not going to finish here," Inspector Williams said. 

Rockhampton residents are being urged to keep windows and doors closed, with the backburn producing a lot of smoke. 

Pilbeam Drive, Elida Street, Elida Lane and Sleipner Street all remain closed to non-residents.
