Fellow inmate ‘told corrections officer’ of Fardon’s planned escape

A Queensland court has been told that notorious sex offender Robert John Fardon's alleged escape attempt was doomed after a fellow inmate informed a corrections officer.

Fardon, who police say was plotting an escape from his supervised release in the Brisbane suburb of Wacol, was arrested and back behind bars last night.

He faced court today after being charged with breaching the conditions of his supervision order.

His lawyer argued that the case against Fardon was "hearsay on hearsay" and that the arrest warrant was invalid.

However, following the testimony of the corrections officer who claimed to have been told of Fardon's planned escape, the judge refused to set aside the warrant, saying the suspicion was "reasonable".

Fardon will remain behind bars until a full hearing on September 16.

Fardon, 65, was convicted in 2003 of rape, sodomy and assault offences.
