Road developments in Sydney’s west create local job boom

Road upgrades worth billions of dollars in Sydney’s west are not only transforming the local transport network – they’re also creating thousands of new jobs.

The Western Sydney Infrastructure Plan has awarded 65 western Sydney contractors and suppliers $18 million in work, which is expected to see the creation of 4000 direct and indirect jobs over the next 10 years. 

“This will provide the Roadcon activity for the expected 1 million people that will move to Western Sydney over the next 20 years,” Parliamentary Secretary Ray Williams said. 

Wetherill Park trailer construction firm Borcat Trailer is already feeling the benefit of the plan, which is jointly funded by state and federal governments. 

Over the last year, the firm has moved to a larger factory and employed six more tradespeople and two apprentices. 

“I’ve never seen it like this to be honest,” a Borcat spokesman told 9NEWS.

“All of our big customers have been confident for the last 13 months and the smaller guys in the last 12 months have all started buying equipment, so yeah it’s very good.” 

St Marys company Premier Plant Hire has been tasked with working on the Werrington Arterial, which will include widening roads and building a new overpass. 

It too has experienced significant growth as a result of the plan, increasing its staff from 18 to almost 50 within a short period.

“As we speak now, the phone’s always ringing, people always asking to get their jobs done, so for us it’s been absolutely fantastic,” spokesman Anthony Scarcella said.

Construction company Seymour White is overseeing the next stage of the Narellan road upgrade, and has testified to how the plan is boosting business. 

“In NSW we’re growing quicker than any other state we’re in,” spokesman Rob Parry-Williams said.

About 60kms of roads will be upgraded as part of the plan.
