Queensland's worst intersections for red light runners revealed

More than 23,000 Queensland motorists have been caught running a red light in the past year, equating to 63 per day.

In the top spot is the junction of Gold Coast Highway and Margaret Avenue in Broadbeach, with one motorist running a red light every five hours.

Eight of the other top 10 locations are in Brisbane, with drivers most commonly caught at Leopard and Stanley Streets in Woolloongabba, Lutwyche and Kedron Park Roads in Kedron and the Gateway Motorway and Old Cleveland Road in Belmont.

"It's really disappointing that so many people think they can just go through a red," RACQ spokesperson Clare Hunter said.

The penalty for running a red light is a $391 fine and three demerit points, but entering an intersection when other road users are not expecting it could easily cost lives, landing the driver responsible in jail.

"Another motorist coming through the intersection from another way, they're not going to have any idea what's about to come flying at them" Ms Hunter said.
