Western Australia's chief psychiatrist will conduct a review after several ambulance officers took their lives in a short period of time.

Four current and former paramedics and ambulance officers have died by suicide in the past 15 months, St John Ambulance has confirmed.

Health Minister Kim Hames says he has asked chief psychiatrist Nathan Gibson to investigate the deaths.

Dr Hames said it appeared a range of factors were involved.

"It seems unlikely that it is the work pressure that is contributing," he said.
