Family angry at authorities after revelation Melbourne murder victim called police for help 38 times

The family of a Melbourne woman killed by her ex-partner has accused Victoria Police of failing to protect her, after it was revealed Kelly Thompson called authorities 38 times in the weeks before she was killed.

Ms Thompson was stalked by her former partner Wayne Wood in the lead up to her death in a murder-suicide at Point Cook.

Today the Coroners Court heard in the weeks before Ms Thompson's death, Wood attempted to strangle her.

Ms Thompson also tried to protect herself and called police 38 times before her death.

Her mother Wendy read a victim impact statement in court today, expressing heartbreak over her daughter's preventable death.

"We will never see Kelly's beautiful, smiling face again, or hear her laugh," she said.

"There is no more Kelly, no more little ray of sunshine, and there should be.

"Kelly's death should never have happened. It was preventable."

Ms Thompson's family is angry at police and said Wood should have been arrested for breach of a court order before she was killed.

A coroner will hand down their findings in the coming days.
