One of Labor's so-called faceless men who help bring down Kevin Rudd in 2010 has been elevated to the opposition frontbench.
Don Farrell, who returned to the Senate at the July election, was named deputy leader of the opposition in the upper house by Labor leader Bill Shorten on Tuesday.
He will also take on responsibility for sport and become the shadow special minister of state.
