RET bill passes lower house

Draft laws paring back the renewable energy target have passed parliament's lower house.

The government gagged debate on the legislation, which reduces the target from 41,000 gigawatt hours to a bipartisan 33,000, as two of its backbench MPs voiced their concerns about the target.

Nationals MP Keith Pitt, who said he would not support the laws on concerns it would raise power bills, was not formally counted in the opposition votes which only included independents Bob Katter and Andrew Wilkie.
