Resurfacing in Melb tunnel to be redone

Resurfacing works that forced the temporary closure of one of Melbourne's largest tunnels will have to be redone after it was found to be rough in sections.

CityLink spokeswoman Ayllie White said an "isolated area" of asphalt on the Domain Tunnel was found to be rough and not to its standards.

Resurfacing works in the Domain Tunnel occurred over three days in December, and it was reopened on New Year's Eve.

The asphalt fault was blamed on dramatic weather fluctuations on a 38C day last week while it was being laid.

"That afternoon we saw a fairly dramatic temperature drop and that's affected the consistency of the asphalt, so it's just a little rougher than we'd ideally like," Ms White said.

She assured motorists this did not pose any safety issues and the repairs would not cause drivers more inconvenience.

The repairs would be carried out during one of its routine maintenance works closures which occur about every four weeks.

"It's absolutely fine for people to travel in the short to medium term, really what we're doing is fixing it to the highest possible standard," she said.
