Responses to institutional child sex abuse

THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT'S RESPONSE TO CHILD SEX ABUSE:

* National Redress Scheme for people who have experienced institutional child sexual abuse.

* The National Office of Child Safety will now report directly to the prime minister. It aims to ensure systemic failures and abuses of power are not repeated.

* A National Centre for Excellence will be established to raise awareness and understanding of the impacts of child sexual abuse and guide best practice for training and services.

* Stopping child sex offenders from travelling overseas without permission.

* A national museum to raise awareness and understanding of the impacts of child sexual abuse.

* A database to share information about people's ability to work with children nationally.

* Working on 104 of 122 recommendations made by the royal commission, with the other 18 being examined in consultation with states and territories.

* From December, the government will report each year for the next five years, and then again in 10 years, on the progress of the recommendations.
