Rescued dolphin released back into the wild following miscarriage

Seven weeks after washing up on a Queensland beach and tragically miscarrying her calf, a dolphin has been returned to the wild to begin life anew.

Video of offshore bottlenose dolphin Sandy’s release back into the wild shows her carers carefully lowering the animal into the water in the vicinity of Moreton Island, before she swims off into the distance.

Sandy was found stranded on the shores of Moreton Island on September 2 and relocated to Sea World on the Gold Coast, where she spent seven weeks in intensive care recovering from her ordeal.

Sea World’s director of marine science, Trevor Long, has described the conditions leading up to Sandy’s rescue.

"It was in big surf and the animal was very unwell," he said.

"Unfortunately, the animal did miscarry, probably due to the battering it took in the surf up there."

Sea World says they are confident Sandy will find her pod again soon.

"Hopefully she will continue to survive and will fall pregnant again,” Mr Long said.
