Rescue crews have hoisted a young man who became stuck on a cliff face at Point Lookout, on North Stradbroke Island, to safety.

Emergency services were alerted to reports of a man stuck about 15m down the cliff about 2pm today, and deployed specialist Queensland Fire and Emergency Services members.

The reports suggested he had fallen about 15m and got stuck, but it now appears he may have been climbing and decided not to continue.

A specialist firefighter abseiled down the cliff to rescue the man, and they continued to the base of the cliff.

Helicopter footage showed a group of people gathered around an SOS message - which included a smiley face drawing - at the cliff base.
