New report claims quarry breach contributed to devastating 2011 floods in Queensland town

A new study into the deadly 2011 Queensland floods has claimed gaps in a quarry contributed to the deluge of water that devastated the town of Grantham, just outside Toowoomba.

The Weekend Australian commissioned the report by international water experts DHI after witnesses speculated on the causes of the flood.

More than four years after the disaster, the investigators used aerial footage obtained from 9NEWS and identified at least four sections where the quarry’s embankment was breached, allegedly releasing a wall of water.

“It was just of horrendous and of forceful proportions,” resident Frank King told 9NEWS.

The findings also claim that a breach measuring 260 metres contributed to the flood waves described by witnesses.

However the Wagners, the family who own the quarry, criticised the report and said it was not based on scientific evidence.

An official inquiry into the floods concurred after stating the quarry was not a contributing factor to the disaster.

To date all official reports have agreed there was no way Grantham could have avoided the floods.
