Renters leave over $100,000 damage bill and threaten landlord

It's every landlord's worst nightmare: unruly renters stripping their property to its bones, even ripping out copper wiring.

It's the nightmare that became reality for Queensland man Hendrik Koorts.

The 68-year-old, who lives in Goodna, Ipswich, found his Marie Street investment property destroyed when he returned to it a week ago.

Damaged appliances, including the oven and cooktop in the kitchen and a split system air conditioner, had all been ripped and smashed from their foundations.

Mountains of clothes and trails of rubbish were left abandoned and walls in every room had been smashed, leaving massive gaping holes.

"I don't understand how people can have that in their mind to do this," Hendrik told 9News.

He believes the wild rampage happened within just 24 hours, telling police his former tenant of eight months could be responsible.

Hendrik issued an eviction notice to the man and his young family last month due to unpaid bills.

"They were over a thousand dollars behind in their rent," he explained.

"I don't know if he expected me to let him stay while he's not paying the rent."

The man even threatened Hendrik in his own front yard, telling the 68-year-old "you're lucky I'm on parole ****. If I wasn't on parole I'd ******* kill you."

The confrontation was filmed on Hendrik's phone.

Despite the threats and the damage, Henrik says it's the first time he's ever had an issue renting the home privately.

The damage bill is likely to total more than $100,000, but thankfully the property is insured.

"I was hoping to retire soon and when I retire (the investment property) will be an income for me," he said.

Police attended the home yesterday, dusting for evidence and any finger prints. They confirmed to 9News they're investigating who caused the 'wilful damage'.
