WHO IS RENAE LAWRENCE?

Former Newcastle panel beater whose father Bob described her as "gullible, naive and bloody stupid. She's not a bad kid, she just got in with the wrong crowd".

She met ringleader Andrew Chan and fellow mules Martin Stephens and Matthew Norman while working for catering company Eurest in Sydney.

She was paid $10,000 after smuggling heroin into Australia in 2004 with Chan who she said threatened to kill her family if she told anyone.

WHAT DID SHE DO?

The following year, desperate for cash, she said she was again forced to strap heroin to her body and smuggle it to Australia for Chan and Myuran Sukumaran.

But Lawrence, then 27, and the eight others were arrested at Bali airport and a local hotel over the plot to smuggle 8.3kg of heroin. Lawrence had more than 2kg of heroin strapped to her body.

WHAT HAPPENED AT HER TRIAL?

Lawrence told the 2006 trial Chan threatened to kill her and her family unless she carried the drugs.

She was sentenced to life in jail even though prosecutors had argued for 20 years because she co-operated with police.

Chan and Sukumaran were sentenced to death; the rest ended up with life in jail.

WHAT HAPPENED WHILE SHE WAS IN JAIL?

Lawrence appeals her life sentence and gets 20 years instead.

In the first few months in Kerobokan prison, Lawrence's mood swung violently between depression and boiling rage, trying to kill herself several times and occasionally bashing prison guards.

But she mellowed, learnt Indonesian and had years shaved off her sentence through remissions for good behaviour. She was transferred to the more relaxed Bangli prison in 2014.

Chan and Sukumaran were executed in 2015.

WHEN WAS SHE RELEASED?

Lawrence was freed from Bali's Bangli Prison on November 21, 2018.

Accompanied by her mother and step-brother, she took an overnight flight to Brisbane before boarding a connecting flight to her hometown of Newcastle.

WHAT HAPPENS NOW?

Now she is on home soil, Lawrence is expected to be questioned by NSW police about a high-speed chase in a stolen car on the Central Coast in March 2005.

Chan, ringleader: executed.

Sukumaran, ringleader: executed.

Scott Rush, mule: life in jail.

Michael Czugaj, mule: life.
