Remote communities along the Gulf of Carpentaria remain on high alert as heavy rain and winds lash the region.

A Tropical Low made landfall over Queensland on Friday morning, bringing wild weather to nearby towns and those across the Northern Territory border.

The system is expected to move back over water on Saturday, with the possibility it could turn into a cyclone late Saturday night or Sunday morning.

A severe weather warning is in place, with up to 200mm of rain expected in 24 hours in some areas.

The Bureau of Meteorology has urged residents in affected areas to stay alert and keep an eye on the changing conditions.
